Can I study in the UK after BREXIT?

The UK is due to leave the European Union (EU) at 23:00 GMT on 31 October 2019. Wait one second, if you are not following the twist and turn, this is a guide that covers the basics.

What is BREXIT?

Brexit – British exit – refers to the UK leaving the EU.
The rise of the word Brexit.

What is the European Union?

The EU is an economic and political union involving 28 European countries. It allows free trade and free movement of people to live and work in whichever country they choose.

The UK joined in 1973 (when it was known as the European Economic Community). If the UK leaves as planned on 31 October, it would be the first member state to withdraw from the EU.

Why is the UK leaving?

A public vote – or referendum – was held on Thursday 23 June 2016, to decide whether the UK should leave or remain. Leave won by 52% to 48%. The referendum turnout was very high at 72%, with more than 30 million people voting – 17.4 million people voted for Brexit.

Several policies have been implemented as regards BREXIT, one policy in particular concerns you as an international student.

UK work visas for foreign graduates have been extended to two years.

International students are to be offered a two-year work visa after graduating from a British university, the government will announce, overturning a key plank of Theresa May’s restrictive immigration policies.

Although at the moment, a graduate with a bachelors or master’s degrees is allowed to look for work for only four months.

However, as from next year,  international graduate  could qualify for a two-year work extension visa in the UK, increasing their chances of finding long-term employment after studying.

Under this new policy, the visas would have no cap on numbers and would allow you to apply for jobs regardless of your skills or the subject you have studied. The government aims to recruit talented graduates in disciplines such as math’s, engineering and technology.

In addition, just last year UK universities educated around 460,000 international students, now this doesn’t include those from the EU. The government aims to grow the number to 600,000 over the next 10 years.
If you were looking for the best time to study in the UK, this is the right time.
